On occasion, vessels attached to moorings become unseaworthy and will need to be disposed of. There is a cost to ratepayers to salvage and/or dispose of the vessel. Third party insurance of vessels with moorings would allow Bay of Plenty Regional Council to reclaim some of those costs during salvage and/or disposal efforts.

We are seeking feedback on introducing new rules requiring owners of boats on moorings to have third party insurance for their vessel and encourage the upkeep of moored vessels. This would mean that all owners of boats on moorings would require third party insurance for their vessel.
