2022 Project Updates

We have been fortunate enough to visit some of the successful applications of the 2022 SSR Fund and see what progress they have made on their projects.
  • Tauranga Girls' College - Log Splitter

This is already in use with three big tree cutting projects completed. The wood has been shared with some of the school community and the project is being run in collaboration with Gate Pā Primary School.

  • Pongakawa School - Chicken Coop and Compost Bins

Pongakawa are well underway with their project - building a school chicken coop and revitalising their worm farms and compost bins to minimise waste. The eggs will be used for senior technology or sold to help maintain the chickens

  • Tauranga Boys' College - Recycle Station

Students volunteered to make the recycle station which is maintained by the school groundsman. The college is wanting to build more as they have already seen it being used by the students on a daily basis.

  • Golden Sands Kindergarten - Compost bins

This project is complete and ready to be used. Golden Sands Kindergarten are motivated and passionate about their sustainability journey and are looking forward to being even more active in this space.

  • Te Pākārito - Maara Kai

With the new fencing installed and a rainwater tank Te Pākārito has planted fruit trees in a safe place that their tamariki can enjoy.

  • Central Kids Ōwhata Kindergarten - Shade trees

Trees have now been planted at Ōwhata Kindergarten that will one day provide shade for our tamariki.

  • Ōpōtiki Primary School - Edible Garden Project

The funding we received has truly revived our garden projects and has given our tamariki the opportunity to learn more about the importance of sustainability and giving them ownership in their learning as they nurture their gardens from seedlings through to maturity

  • Kawerau Preschool Learning Centre - Sensory Garden

We have sustainable practices and habits inbuilt into our centre community that we are proud of including our sensory gardens. It was great having the SSR Team visit to see what we have been up to. Our tamariki and our teachers love the garden.

  • Tauranga Intermediate School - Te Maro

We want to do our part in creating a sustainable future by establishing a community edible garden. We are still working on our raised garden beds and shade houses where our students and community work together to learn sustainable practices and skills needed to grow and harvest kai.

  • Pyes Pā School - Bush School

Pyes Pā School applied to the fund to enable access to the local stream nearby their school. They are using their new access to the stream to enable both educational and recreational use of the stream.

  • Whakatāne Intermediate School - Sustainable Garden

Our school community have been involved from seed germination and to project completion and maintenance. Students have learnt about the growth cycle of plants and how to successfully grow their own food. The woodworks teachers contributed by upcycling old crate wood and corrugated iron off an old shed to make planter boxes to supplement the project. We love their collaboration, innovation and cultivation!

  • Welcome Bay Kindergarten - Garden Redevelopment

It has been great to redevelop our vegetable garden boxes. This is a big part of what we do and there have been many people involved.
