Introduction
Why are we making changes?
It’s time to make buses in Rotorua more attractive and simpler to use, while getting people around the City Centre more easily. This includes introducing new bus routes which go across the city, putting buses on some new streets and removing them from others where fewer people catch the bus.
These changes will provide better value for money, encourage more people to enjoy the benefits of public transport and leave their car at home!
What are we consulting on?
We’re refreshing the urban bus network in Rotorua and we’re inviting feedback from the community before we make any changes.
The project will improve the existing bus routes and also change the way buses circulate in the City Centre.
When will the changes be introduced?
Once we’ve heard from the community and local businesses, we’ll be finalising the details to improve the bus network. We are aiming to make the changes in late 2022 or early 2023.
Once the new bus network
is in place, we will check in with the community again
to ensure our bus services are working well.
About the refresh
Changes at a glance
There are currently eleven separate urban routes in Rotorua which will be simplified into five new routes. The bus route naming will be simplified and improved with the old route numbers replaced with letters A to E and colour coded.
Dedicated school and tertiary bus services will stay the same.
The very low number of passengers on Sundays means that frequencies will be reduced to match customer demand.
Summary of route changes:
- Route 10 will change to Route A (Airport - CBD - Lakefront)
- Routes 1, 11, and 12 will change to Route B (Ngongotahā - Hospital - CBD - Toi Ohomai - Tihi-o-Tonga)
- Routes 7, 9 and parts of 5 and 8 will change to Route C (Mitchell Downs - CBD - Springfield)
- Routes 4, 6 and parts of 5 and 8 will change to Route D (Kawaha Point - Selwyn Heights - CBD - Sunnybrook / Westbrook)
- Routes 3 and parts of 10 will change to Route E (Holdens Bay - Lynmore - CBD)
