Have your say on two proposed amendments to the 2024 Navigation Safety Bylaw

24 October 2025

Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council is now accepting public submissions on two proposed amendments to the 2024 Bay of Plenty Navigation Safety Bylaw (the Bylaw). This is your chance to have your say on two kaupapa (issues).

The first amendment proposes the creation of a new maritime exclusion zone to the north of Motiti Island. This would prevent large vessels over 500 gross tonnes from transiting between Motiti Island and the existing Astrolabe Reef, Brewis Shoal and O Karapu Reef exclusions zones.

The second proposed amendment would change the Tauranga Harbour shipping channels from a 'restricted' anchorage to a 'prohibited' anchorage, meaning that no vessel will be able to anchor in the channel at any time, except in an emergency.

Written submissions can be made via this site from Friday 24 October 2025 until Sunday 11 January 2026.
