New fare system is expected in late 2025

20 March 2025

Thanks to everyone who took part in the public transport fares review. Your feedback, whether through the Participate survey, community sessions or emails, played a big part in shaping what’s changing.

We know changes to how fares work can have an impact, and it was clear from your input that people value a system that’s fair, rewards regular use, and doesn’t make things more complicated. Your voices helped guide the decisions, especially around:

  • Keeping things affordable for regular users – your support for this helped bring in daily and weekly fare caps, so there’s a limit to how much you’ll pay.
  • Encouraging off-peak travel – we heard that flexibility matters, which backed the move to 50% off-peak discounts during quieter travel times.
  • Supporting those who need it most – we heard how important it is to keep public transport accessible. That’s why the new system continues to include discounts for Community Services Card holders, accessibility users, and SuperGold card holders.

While some changes were needed to reflect rising costs and national direction, the focus has been on finding the right balance, and your feedback helped get us there.

The new fare system is expected in late 2025, with half-price youth fares from 2026. We’ll keep you in the loop with all the info you’ll need before the changes happen.
